ORIGEN
c.182 - c.254
Theologian in Alexandria
Origen was one of the most influential theologians of the
early Greek church. He was the head of the Christian
Catechetical School in Alexandria, but was opposed by the
bishop of Alexandria.
Origin went to Palestine, where
he finished his 'Hexapla', a great biblical synopsis of six
versions of the Old Testament. Origen taught that the Bible
offered differing levels of insight according to the varying
capacities of men in their progress toward spiritual
perfection.
During the persecution under
the emperor Decius (250), he was imprisoned and tortured but
survived for four more years. |
